Ingredients

For the Filling
  • ½ pound Ground Beef Substitute with turkey or plant-based ground meat for a lighter option.
  • 1 cup Marinara Sauce Ensure it’s thick to prevent sogginess.
  • 1 cup Ricotta Cheese Swap with cottage cheese for a lower-fat alternative.
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese (grated) Can substitute with Pecorino Romano for a stronger flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning Use a blend of dried basil, oregano, and thyme if unavailable.
For the Bread
  • 8 slices Sourdough Bread Whole grain or gluten-free options work well.
  • ½ tablespoon Unsalted Butter (softened) Olive oil can be used as a healthier alternative.
For the Cheese
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese (shredded) Feel free to mix in provolone or fontina for extra flavor.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, add ½ pound of ground beef. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until evenly browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, stir in 1 cup of marinara sauce with the cooked ground beef. Allow to simmer on low heat for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of ricotta cheese, ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese, and 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Blend until smooth.
  4. Spread ½ tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Flip over 4 slices and layer with the ricotta mixture, followed by the beef and marinara mix, and top with shredded mozzarella.
  5. Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the assembled sandwiches in the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  6. Once golden brown and gooey, remove and cut each sandwich in half. Serve with extra marinara sauce on the side.
