Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1/4 ounce active dry yeast Ensures your dough rises well, check it's fresh!
  • 1/4 cup water Activate the yeast with warm water; too hot will kill it!
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Creates a soft structure; swap with bread flour for extra chewiness.
  • 1 cup sour cream Adds moisture and richness; Greek yogurt is a suitable substitute.
  • 3 tablespoons sugar Sweetens the dough; reduce if you prefer less sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for flavor balance, enhancing the overall taste of the dough.
For the Filling
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Brings depth to the filling; essential for that homey flavor.
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon The key ingredient that gives these twists their signature taste.
For the Glaze
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar Adjust based on your sweetness preference when drizzling.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Sour Cream Cinnamon Twists
  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water with active dry yeast and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture along with sour cream, and mix well.
  3. Knead together for about 5-7 minutes to form a soft dough, then shape into a ball.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Prepare the filling by mixing brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread softened butter over it and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar filling.
  7. Cut the dough into strips, twist each, and place them on a greased baking sheet.
  8. Let the twists rise for another 30 minutes before preheating the oven to 375°F.
  9. Bake the twists for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  10. Prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar with milk. Drizzle over the cooled twists.
