  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Gather all your ingredients and equipment.
  2. In a skillet, sauté the sliced onions with butter for 20-25 minutes until caramelized. Deglaze with beef broth.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, garlic, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix gently.
  4. Fold in the cooled caramelized onions and half of the Gruyère cheese.
  5. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it in the baking dish. Bake for about 1 hour or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
