Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x9 baking pan by lightly greasing it with nonstick spray.
  2. Combine all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon. Cut in cold unsalted butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Sift together all-purpose flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. In another bowl, whisk vegetable oil, granulated sugar, egg, egg white, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gently fold the wet mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in diced apples and chopped walnuts.
  5. Pour the batter into the greased baking pan and sprinkle the crumb topping over it, pressing lightly.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until edges are golden and firm. A toothpick should come out with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Prepare the warm vanilla glaze by whisking melted butter, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  8. Drizzle the warm glaze over the cake after it cools for 10-15 minutes, allowing it to set briefly before slicing.
  9. Slice the cake into squares and serve warm, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
