Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by draining, rinsing, and lightly drying the black beans. Spread them out on a clean kitchen towel to reduce excess moisture.
- In a large mixing bowl, mash approximately 80% of the beans using a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunks for added texture.
- Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is soft and translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Set aside to cool.
- Combine the mashed black beans, sautéed onion and garlic, oats or breadcrumbs, spices, soy sauce, and an egg or flax egg in the mixing bowl. Stir until everything is well incorporated.
- Divide the mixture into 4-5 equal portions, shaping each into a patty. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Pan-fry each patty in heated olive oil for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown, or bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes.
- Serve on toasted buns with your favorite toppings.
