Ingredients

For the Batter
  • 4 large Eggs Essential for fluffiness and provide structure.
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour Main structure; substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option.
  • 1 cup Milk Adds moisture; can be swapped with almond milk for a dairy-free version.
  • 4 tablespoons Melted Butter Enhances flavor and moisture; consider using olive oil for a lighter touch.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Balances sweetness and enhances overall flavors; do not omit.
  • 1 dash Black Pepper Introduces a hint of spice; adjust to taste.
For the Savory Filling
  • 1 cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese Provides a rich, tangy flavor.
  • 4 slices Crispy Bacon Adds savory crunch; replace with sautéed mushrooms or crispy tempeh for a vegetarian option.
For Garnish
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Parsley Used for garnish to add color and freshness.
  • 2 tablespoons Chives Used for garnish to add color and freshness.

Equipment

  • 10-inch cast-iron skillet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) with a 10-inch cast-iron skillet placed inside. Allow it to heat for about 10-15 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together 4 eggs, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of milk, and 4 tablespoons of melted butter until smooth. Add salt and black pepper. Let rest for 5 minutes.
  3. Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and swirl to coat. This creates a non-stick base.
  4. Pour the rested batter into the hot skillet, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese and crumbled crispy bacon on top.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes without opening the door. The Cheddar & Bacon Dutch Baby will puff up and turn golden brown.
  6. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and chives. Drizzle honey if desired.
